Languages

Languages modern and ancient are offered at Newton, with extra languages being offered in our Clubs & Activities after school

Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)

At Newton Prep, we believe that languages are an essential life skill. French is taught to all pupils from Reception to Year 6 and then pupils have the choice between French and Spanish when they enter Year 7.

As well as ensuring our pupils acquire excellent language proficiency, our aim is for them to develop a love of language and culture.

Throughout their language-learning journey, pupils are exposed to a variety of authentic materials such as songs, videos and films to enhance their thirst for knowledge. They work on exciting projects imitating French art and describing it, writing poetry and performing plays. Year 7 experience La vie Française and test their ability to communicate competently during their residential trip to to France.

Latin

All pupils from Year 6 onwards study Latin because we believe the ability to communicate effectively is a core skill which every modern citizen of the world will need above all. Decoding language, logical deduction and expressing yourself with fluency and accuracy are fundamental to the development of a successful all-rounder,  something we expect all our pupils to be. Latin teaches all of these skills, and more. Not only does it enable our pupils to tackle modern foreign languages and English with confidence and more enhanced knowledge of grammar and vocabulary, it also opens a door to the ancient classical world.

At Newton Prep, we follow a comprehensive Latin curriculum, with the addition of studying the myths and legends, and study of the real Roman world. We use London’s rich Roman heritage to bring this to life, with various visits to London’s Roman sites, as well as organising a sell-out bi-annual Classics trip to Italy.
