At Newton Prep, we consider language acquisition to be a vital life skill. From Reception through to Year 6, all pupils study French, after which they have the opportunity to choose between continuing with French or exploring Spanish as they enter Year 7.
Beyond fostering strong language proficiency, our goal is to instil a lasting passion for languages and cultural understanding. Throughout their language-learning journey, pupils engage with an array of authentic resources, including songs, videos, and films, to deepen their curiosity and appreciation. They also undertake creative projects, such as recreating French art, writing poetry, and performing in plays.
In Year 8, pupils embark on an immersive residential trip to the Bay of Biscay, where they experience La vie Française and La Vida Española firsthand. This adventure enhances their language skills in practical, real-world situations while allowing them to enjoy the region’s rich offerings. Whether surfing, paddleboarding, tasting pinxos, or playing traditional games like pelota, pupils immerse themselves in local culture, gaining experiences that enrich their language learning and deepen their appreciation of both French and Spanish traditions.
