Cricket pads and bats were temporarily laid to one side this week, when Troy Deeney, the star striker of Watford FC, came with a team from Watford to run a football workshop for children in Years 6, 7 & 8.

The Birmingham-born footballer, who turned his own life around with the help of both football and, literally, going back to school, had an instant rapport with both our children and those visiting from St Mary’s RC Primary and Sacred Heart RC Primary. After an hour on the All-Weather Pitch he and his team-mate Bernard  answered questions on fame, training, diet and nutrition in the Recital Hall for another 40 minutes. Elfreda Hall spoke up for the girls when she asked Troy what Watford FC were doing to support women’s football!

Since then the Twittersphere has been buzzing, with Troy himself going out of his way to tweet how much he had enjoyed the afternoon. Many thanks to Newton mum Magda Pozzo for arranging this visit: the children’s very own Sports Forum!
