The Vikings are coming!

Results are in for the annual Year 5 Newton Prep Viking ship-building competition and with a range of both designs and materials - from simple playdough to a 'virtual' CGI ship crafted using Google SketchUp - the choice on display definitely earned their Viking owners the right to feast at Valhalla...

As ever, Head of History Mr McAfee co-ordinated the competition and led the Prize-Giving Assembly with his usual elan and deadpan wit ("What do Erik the Red and Elizabeth the Second have in common?"... "The same middle name..."!) while Mrs Fleming was on hand to help judge the various winners and to hand out certificates of Distinction or Headmistress's Merit.

The following children were given Headmistress’s Merits and Distinctions ‘for a splendid Viking ship’: Rafe Chiltern Hunt, Nikita Egorov, Haya Kattan, Ksenia Monogarova, Elysia Bennaceur, Solomon Williams, Eliza Robinson, Luke Coltman, Carlotta Taricco, Francesca Muir, Matt Wilkinson. Tom Heckels, Jake Sandeberg, William Lancaster, Mahiti Ira. See photos below for a few of these winners. Every Year 5 received a Horrible Histories book prize.

Last Monday, we had the Viking Ship assembly with Mr McAfee, celebrating the annual Year 5 competition to build, name and explain your very own Viking ship. “Every year, I set out a challenge to the parents of SouthWest London,” joked Mr McAfree, “and this year they have come up with fantastic results!” He went on to explain that every ship is a winner in its own right. A panel of four judges (Mrs Fleming, Mr Hearn, Mr Lurie and Mrs Frieze) had picked out category favourites, who were awarded Distinctions and Headmistress’s Merits, but every contestant won the prize of a Horrible Histories book: I got the Slimy Stuarts! All the ships looked amazing – I made mine out of cardboard, but some were made out of wood, one was made totally out of Match Attax and one was built virtually on Google SketchUp, very innovative.
