Drama at Newton Prep is an important part of the school curriculum and life of the school. It allows children to explore their creativity through improvisation, group and independent work, playscripts and productions. Drama exposes the children to a variety of theatrical genres whilst encouraging them to assert themselves confidently and explore their imaginations using a range of different stimuli.

Drama is a vital part of school life and the curriculum at Newton Prep as it is very important for the personal development of the child. Every child through Years 3 to 7 is taught drama as part of the educational curriculum. Lessons are taught in a beautiful and spacious theatre at Newton Prep. This fully equipped auditorium has a technical and sound room, dressing rooms and storage facilities, a stage and an open floor space.

Productions at Newton aim to reach a new level of professionalism and spectacle, encouraging the children to excel in all aspects of the performing arts.

In Year 3, children take part in their first whole year group musical production. Previous years’ productions have included: The Blue Crystal, A Kidsummer Night’s Dream (a children’s version of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream), The Wizard of Oz and The Tempest.

“Congratulations on a wonderful & magical performance of A Kidsummer Night’s Dream. I know everyone has worked so hard for so long and the result was stunning. We were amazed at the performances our children delivered, which were way beyond our expectations. Congratulations for inspiring so many young children to prepare such a wonderful feast for us.”

In Year 4 children take part in the Newton ‘Film project’. The children create, produce, direct and perform in short 'silent' films. Background preparation includes practical workshops on film history, screenwriting and camerawork, as well as fight choreography and technical trickery. The culmination of the film project is the Newton Film Festival: a black tie event for children and parents with a premier of the film shorts and a prestigious awards ceremony.

“We just wanted to say an enormous thank you for a spectacular evening last night. It was clear that the children were having a wonderful time with their films… but we had no idea how amazing the results were going to be. At the interval, a recurring statement among the parents was ‘this is why we send our children to Newton’… As parents, we are very grateful to you for making this project possible and for making school such a brilliant place for our children to learn.”

In Year 6, the summer term's focus is a large-scale musical production involving all pupils. Throughout the rehearsal process children are guided and encouraged to improve and refine their acting, and their understanding of backstage responsibilities. All students gain valuable theatrical experience working as a cast member of a professionally staged and choreographed group performance. Productions are chosen to excite, enthuse and challenge this year group. Previous productions have included: Alice in Wonderland, Bugsy Malone, Grease and Disney’s Aladdin.

The performing arts are a celebrated and cherished part of school life at Newton, encouraging children to find their talent and develop the confidence to share it with others. If your child would relish the opportunity to learn new theatrical skills, explore the creative world of performing arts and have some dramatic fun, Newton may be just the place for them!
