Newton Preparatory School Mission Statement

The students at Newton Prep love science because the facilities are outstanding, the teachers are enthusiastic, and there is an opportunity to do practical science experiments in every lesson.

Our students produce impressive results every year in Common Entrance and scholarship examinations, and when they move on to their senior schools our students not only have an excellent knowledge of the subject but they also have exemplary practical skills.

In the Lower School (Reception to Year 2) science is taught by class teachers who focus on introducing the important science concepts in child-friendly, hands-on experiments.

Pupils in the Upper School (Years 3 to 8) are taught by specialist science teachers in three fully equipped, purpose-built laboratories. Biology, chemistry and physics are taught as discrete disciplines. The science lessons are based upon an interactive approach in which pupils solve problems through scientific investigations. Practical experiments are carefully designed to illustrate concepts included in Common Entrance examinations. Pupils discover many scientific facts for themselves and this ensures that science is a popular academic subject.

The three state-of-the-art laboratories were opened in 2009. Each laboratory is equipped with an area of tiered seating for demonstration and teaching purposes as well as modular benches for practical work. The laboratories are also equipped with digital cameras and computers which allow the teachers to integrate ICT into their lessons. This technology helps boost pupils’ interest and understanding through the use of video clips and a digital microscope.

Newton Prep has a garden and wildlife area that was developed by the science department with the help of parents and pupils in 2002. This delightful area is visited by the whole school throughout the year and is used specifically to teach ecology concepts in Years 4 to 8. This area is maintained by the after school gardening club run by the science department.
