Information and Communication Technology has become an integral part of our everyday lives, and many of us depend on computers and associated technology not only in our working day but also in our leisure time. Our children are growing up in an age in which such technology is not new or intimidating, but simply a part of their world.

Newton Prep has embraced the new direction of Computing at this exciting time, with a new curriculum that is about developing the life skills of computational thinking alongside the more specific programs and skills that will enable them to become technological producers as well as more savvy (and safe) consumers. As it turns out, Computing is around us in everything we do, whether we’re using technology or not. From how computers and other devices work to how we make decisions in our everyday lives – the most powerful computers that we have access to are inside our own heads and Newton Prep teaches children the analytical skills that they will need to understand the world around them, not just the those parts of it that are attached to screens!

At Newton Prep children are introduced to ICT at an early stage. Every classroom has an Interactive Whiteboard that encourages a multimedia approach to teaching and learning. In the early years especially, the computer significantly enhances our multi-sensory approach towards a rewarding level of achievement in reading, writing and numeracy.

We promote a cross-curricular approach to ICT, though children are taught discrete ICT lessons from Year 1 to Year 8 by subject specialist teachers, who aim to develop, maintain and stimulate pupils' curiosity, interest and enjoyment in ICT and Computing. Although we ensure that National Curriculum standards are being met, schemes of work are prepared which go beyond its guidelines providing continuity and developing progression in the acquisition of transferable skills, concepts, principles, methods and vocabulary.

Pupils are encouraged to develop personal qualities such as perseverance, initiative, empathy, self-confidence, independence and support for each other through their work in.

The school has three ICT suites, each equipped with fully networked PCs for classes of twenty children and an interactive whiteboard.
