Newton Preparatory School Mission Statement

At Newton Prep we use our great facilities and resources to make mathematics fun, interactive, and practical. We make the most of maths challenges and team competitions to encourage participation and ensure our pupils are enthusiastic about achieving great results.

At Newton Prep (named after one of the greatest English mathematician, Sir Isaac Newton) our aim is to give students an appreciation of the nature of mathematics. In addition to being a subject in its own right, mathematics underpins all other subjects. At Newton Prep pupils learn the language and skills of mathematics in a fun, focused environment.

We develop the core skills of numeracy, mental, and applied mathematics, while also giving pupils the opportunity to explore the broader subject. By whetting the appetite of our young mathematicians we hope to instil a spirit of enquiry and structural reasoning that will stand them in good stead for future studies.

At Newton Prep the mathematics curriculum is based on the National Strategy for Mathematics and the Common Entrance Syllabus, tailored to our children’s needs. Children are ability set for maths from Year 1 (aged 5/6) upwards, and work at levels appropriate to their ability and pace of learning. There is movement between the sets according to individual progress.

Our aim is to encourage pupils to question, develop investigative thinking, and apply their knowledge to real life problems.

Challenges

At Newton Prep we use maths challenges and team competitions to encourage participation and ensure our pupils are enthusiastic about achieving great results. Newton Prep gives children the opportunity to participate in competitions internally and externally, as well as running an in-house maths challenge every fortnight.

The Primary Maths Challenge - The school achieves great success in the Primary Maths Challenge with many candidates receiving Gold, Silver, or Bronze certificates.

Junior Mathematics Challenge - All children in Years 6-8 are encouraged to sit the Junior Maths Challenge. The most successful participants may be invited to enter the Junior Maths Olympiad.

United Kingdom Mathematical Trust - Children from Year 8 are selected to participate in the Maths Team Challenge. This challenge requires excellent cooperation and team building skills as well as mathematical ability.
