Newton Preparatory School Mission Statement

With two large purpose-built art studios, professional artist teachers and a full time art assistant we believe Newton Prep offers exceptional provision for Art.

We have a large kiln and offer all forms of sculpture and ceramics, textiles and printmaking. We pride ourselves on the quality and diversity of the work the children produce and the confidence and enjoyment the children take in their work.

Visit the Photo Gallery to see some examples of recent work.

The art curriculum is taught through an exciting mix of varied projects, encompassing a very wide range of processes, skills and experiences, both 2D and 3D. Children are helped to make links between their own work and that of other artists. Regular trips include The Tate Modern, The Courtauld Gallery and The National Portrait Gallery. A variety of art clubs are also on offer, with special provision for our most able older students. We also try to invite practising artists to work with the children on a regular basis. Recent examples include two different artists working in mosaic, a weaver and a painter, each of whom ran practical workshops with the children.

At Newton Prep the entire school is filled with lively, colourful displays that celebrate our pupils’ achievements. By the end of KS2, most of our pupils are achieving well above National Curriculum level descriptions for their age in art. Our most able students are helped to prepare outstanding portfolios and we have an excellent record of helping children win art scholarships to popular senior schools.

Year 5 Model Birds

Around the school at the moment you will find some lovely displays of birds made by Y5.  During the project they learnt many skills, including using shapes to help the proportion and accuracy of their drawings, modelling skills using wire and different papers, and mark-making to show plumage.  Each pupil made a model of a garden bird and then they used their imaginations to create a fantasy bird.  There are some amazingly detailed models.

Well done Y5!  Plus a big thank you to Miss Delafons for creating the stunning displays, using real branch systems. Summer has truly come to Newton!
