Newton Preparatory School Mission Statement

The English Department believes in nurturing a love of creativity in all our children through language and literature. As well as encouraging an awareness of literature, we are responsible for ensuring that all pupils achieve a high standard of literacy, which will enable them to flourish in all curriculum areas.

Reading is central to learning in Lower School. In Nursery and Reception children are introduced to the ‘Jolly Phonics’ reading scheme which provides a vivid way for them to learn all of their sounds through pictures, actions and songs. They then progress on to phonetic reading books and guided reading in small assessed groups. Writing skills begin with the teaching of cursive script and by Year 1, children complete grammar and spelling work as well as write stories and complete comprehension tasks, all of which are differentiated according to ability.

The building blocks provided by English in the Lower School, ensure that our children are effective communicators by the time they reach the Upper School, where from Year 4 upwards, they are taught by subject specialists.

In the Upper School, class readers, which range from Chaucer and Shakespeare to 21st century novelists such as Nicky Singer and Marcus Sedgwick, form the centre of all our teaching and learning. All genres of writing spring from our study of literature, and we strive to develop imaginative, informed and expressive students through this contextualisation.

Through discussions, debates, presentations, giving talks and performing their own plays students explore the essential communication skills of speaking and listening. We aim to enrich our students’ understanding of the English language, which they learn to use accurately and articulately in the written and spoken form.

There are regular trips to theatres and locations linked with the themes and settings of our novels. Additionally, all of our pupils take part in regular school productions organised by form teachers and the Drama Department. Students also enter the Mencap Spellathon, sponsored reading competitions and debates as well as both national and in-house poetry competitions.
