Fundraising plays an important part in the life of Newton Prep.

The children have the responsibility, under the direction of the Charity Committee, an offshoot of the pupil parliament, for researching and choosing each year’s charity program. Once a charitable organisation is chosen the pupils organise events to raise both awareness and money. They aim to choose a diverse range of charities based both in the UK and abroad, and the majority of those are for children and are therefore of particular relevance to our pupils. Over the past few years they have raised substantial sums each term through activities including a whole school sponsored walk in Battersea Park, car washes, cake sales, a Mad Hatter’s Day, carol service collection and Odd Sock Day, as well as numerous sponsored reading, maths and spelling events.

Newton Prep’s commitment to fundraising and raising awareness of those less fortunate is closely linked to our PSHE curriculum. We believe that this is an intrinsic part of each child’s educational development and enables them to play a more developed role within the wider community.

Charities supported by the pupils, staff and parents of Newton Prep in the last few years include NSPCC, LEPRA, Send a Cow, Great Ormond Street Hospital, Children in Need and Mencap.

In 2014, a summer's sponsored walk through Battersea Park (pictured above) raised £24,934: the largest ever single sum raised by a school for an inner city children's charity.

Sums raised in the academic year 2015-16 have so far included:

  • Christmas Card Drive £1,461
  • Macmillan Cancer Support: £800
  • Poppy Appeal, Royal British Legion: £375
  • Shelter: £800
  • Love in a Box: over 300 boxes of gifts worth c£5 each
  • Dementia Dogs: £451
  • Crisis: £492
  • Syrian Clothes Drive: 850-900 kgs of clothes shipped for free to Jordanian refugee camps

TOTAL:  nearly £35,000 last year, with much more to come!

In parallel to Newton Prep's charitable work for outside organisations, its PTA raises an enormous amount each year through events and countless other initiatives for the Newton Bursary Fund, thereby enabling more bright children to be able to afford to come to the school.

On Monday 16th November 2016, the co-chairs of the PTA, Vic Davison and Haggis Walker, presented the PTA's largest ever cheque, for £30,000, to Dr Walji and Zac Barrett, the Chairman of the Newton Bursary Fund

Newton Prep is now signed up to Easyfundraising, an online organisation whereby online purchasing (from retailers like Amazon, John Lewis, Boots and Groupon) through them raises a percentage of purchase costs for the Newton Bursary Fund.
